Oschersleben Tourism Information
The German town of Oschersleben is situated in the Magdeburger Börde district of Sachsen-Anhalt, around 35 km south-west of Magdeburg. The Große Graben, a river fed by the streams of the Schöninger Aue and the Hohlebach, flows into the River Bode in Oschersleben, where the Bode reaches its most northerly point. This area is called the Großes Bruch due to its extended network of watercourses.
The town has a population of around 17,000 and features many interesting historic buildings for visitors to enjoy. These include the Renaissance living quarters of a former castle (Schloss) dating from 1545, the baroque town hall (Rathaus) of 1691, the neo-gothic Protestant church of St Nicholas (Nikolaikirche) of 1881, and the Catholic church of St Mary (Marienkirche) built between 1867 and 1869. In the middle of a field beyond the eastern outskirts of the town, the ruins of the Peseckendorfer Warte, a defensive tower, can still be seen.
The Sämann, the town's present-day landmark, is another popular tourist attraction. This well-known sculpture stands outside the entrance to the library. The Sämann, the Sower, symbolises the fertile soil of the Börde area and has the same significance for Oschersleben as the Bremer Stadtmusikanten, the Town Musicians, have for Bremen.
Since 25 July 1997, the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben has been a further attraction of the region. The FIA WTCC, FIA GT and DTM take place on this multi-purpose race track, as well as many other race series.
